Safer gambling
Sites outside the UK Gambling Commission system are not required to check whether you can afford to play. They also need not cap slot stakes or prompt you to set limits, so the responsibility falls on you. That is a lot to carry, particularly if gambling has already caused problems.
Questions to ask yourself
- Have you staked more than you meant to in the last month?
- Do you go back to recover what you lost?
- Have you borrowed money or sold belongings to fund a bet?
- Do you keep your play secret from family or friends?
- Has gambling made you anxious, or cost you sleep?
One "yes" is reason enough to take a break and talk to someone.
Steps that work
- Ask your bank to block gambling transactions. Many UK banks can do this in their app, and blocks cover overseas sites too.
- Install blocking software on your phone and computer.
- Decide on a monthly amount in advance, and stop when it has gone.
- Never use a credit card or a loan to gamble.
- Switch on every limit the site offers before you make a deposit.
Already self-excluded?
Your GAMSTOP registration is doing its job. Joining a site outside the scheme would undo it. If the urge is strong, consider a longer exclusion and speak to an adviser today.
